STS-41C Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) deploy from OV-099 payload b

Description: During STS-41C, the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) is deployed from Challenger's, Orbiter Vehicle (OV) 099's, payload bay (PLB) into Earth orbit free drift. LDEF drifts above PLB and appears to be balanced on the space shuttle vertical tail. Also in the scene are the orbital maneuvering system (OMS) pods and the cloud-covered surface of the Earth. View was released by the Public Affairs Office (PAO) before the STS-32 LDEF retrieval mission. Alternate 41C mission number is STS41C-36-1615.
